You Can Go To One Game Tonight: Kobe's Final Game Or The Warriors Wins Record Attempt...Who Ya Got?
“If you had tickets to both games but could only go to 1, which would you go to- Kobe’s final game, or the Warriors record breaking game?”
This question has been buzzing around the Internet, talk radio, office watercoolers, you name it for the last week or so. Because tonight the Lakers host the Jazz in what will be Kobe Bryant’s last game before he retires and joins the Wizards in a couple years, while at the exact same time Steph Curry and the Warriors play the Grizzlies with the Bulls regular season wins record on the line.
The hypothetical is simple enough- if you could choose to attend one of the games for free, let’s say in decent seats, which would you go to?
On one hand, you have the Golden State Warriors. They are having arguably the best season any team has ever had in any professional sport. They are coming off an NBA Championship and got even better. Steph Curry is coming off an MVP season and got even better. Think about this- Steph set the NBA record for 3’s last season with 286. He has 392 this year. 392! You better believe he’s gunning for 400 tonight. And you know what else is wild? Klay Thompson is currently tied for 3rd on the single-season 3 pointer list with 272. Out of every player in NBA history, Klay is 1 3 pointer away from having the 3rd best 3 point shooting season ever. Insanity.
And then on the other hand, you have Kobe. One of the greatest players who ever played the game. He’s finishing off an absolutely dreadful season both individually and as a team. Though I’m not a Kobe guy, I can remove my personal feelings about him and respect the shit out of his career. All the rings, all the scoring titles, all the white girls. He’s a legend of the game, no doubt about it.
But I think it’s a no-brainer what game you go to. You go see the Warriors make history. You go see Steph in his prime set the regular season wins record with the best team in NBA history. And knowing Steph, he probably shoots 8/10 from 3 and gets to 400 3 pointers too. The Lakers will have all sorts of ceremonies and video montages, which will be cool and all, but then you still have to watch Kobe struggle on the court. That’s what it comes down to- live in the now and in the future, not in the past. See history get made, not walk out the door. Plus the atmosphere at Oracle is electric. When the Warriors go on 10-0 runs when they are running laps around their opponent up and down the court it’s one of the best crowds in sports.
Objectively, you can’t pass up the chance to see history get made. Seeing Kobe in his prime was truly special. I won’t take that away from him. But the history the Warriors can make tonight might never, ever be repeated. And I just don’t think you can pass that up to see live and in person.
What’s your pick? Vote 1 for going to see the Lakers, Vote 10 for going to see the Warriors
